What works best for dogs

Wood privacy (usually 6 ft)

Most popular call for dog owners around here. A solid six-foot line blocks the street view, which cuts barking at passersby and removes the “I can see it, so I should chase it” trigger. Chain link (4–6 ft)

Cheaper, durable, and clear sight lines. Fine for calmer dogs that aren’t escape artists. Jumpers and climbers need six feet and a top rail that doesn’t give them a boost. Downside: dogs can see everything, so reactive barkers often do better behind privacy. Details: chain link fencing.

Composite privacy

Same visual block as wood, tougher against chewing than soft pickets, and less stain work over time. Good when you want privacy without replacing boards every few years.

Iron / ornamental

Looks sharp and lasts. Works for well-trained dogs that don’t dig or bolt. Pickets spacing matters — standard gaps can let toy breeds through. Not our first pick for diggers or lungers. See iron / ornamental.

Match the fence to the behavior

Jumpers

Huskies, shepherds, athletic mixes — start at six feet. Solid privacy helps because they can’t see a reason to clear the top. Four-foot lines fail here more than people expect.

Diggers

Terriers, beagles, dachshunds. Options: bury mesh or hardware cloth along the base, set a deeper bottom rail, or add dig guards when we install. Kansas yards aren’t always flat — we follow grade so you don’t get a sneak-under gap on a slope.

Chewers

Puppies and anxious dogs will work wood pickets. Composite or chain link holds up better. Bitter spray on the bottom rail during training helps; the fence still has to survive the learning curve.

Small dogs

Close the gaps. Tight wood or composite panels, no big openings under gates. Three inches under a gate is enough for a determined Chihuahua.

Mistakes we see a lot

Four-foot fence for a big breed. A Lab can clear it. When in doubt, go taller.

Weak gate. The fence is only as good as the latch. Self-closing hinges and a latch the dog can’t bump open matter as much as the panels. We build and hang swing gates for that reason.

Gaps on slopes. Stepped panels leave triangles at the bottom if nobody custom-cuts the bottom rail. That’s how dogs leave.

Invisible fence as the only barrier. Shock collars don’t stop other animals from coming in, and a motivated dog will run through the zap. A physical fence is the reliable option.
